Skylar and Jarrod on MultiCultural Day

Image
SKYLAR AND JARROD ON MULTI CULTURAL DAY Skylar and Jarrod went to grade school at University Elementary in Irvine, not too far from UC Irvine.  Because of the location their school was full of children from many different cultures, Persian, Pakistani, Japanese, Romanian and many more.  Every year their school would have a Multi Cultural Day when kids would wear clothes (or costumes) from their respective countries or cultures.  Sky and Jarrod felt left out.  Though Jack and I are mostly Anglo European we are also each part Eastern European. Neither of us have much from our Slavic or Serbian cultures except a few words and of course foods.  But I wasn't going to have my kids left out so I made them these costumes.  This was pre internet pretty much so all I had were reference books.  I couldn't find anything specifically Slavic or Serbian but I did find Polish, Hungarian, etc. and decided to put together the best I could.  I...

UCI Staff Picnic September 1999 I worked in the Dean's Office in the School of Humanities from 1996 to 2006. Skylar and Jarrod (left to right) and Becky (far right) are watching Herb Killackey get dunked in the dunk tank at our annual staff picnic. The kids were very good at hitting the target and since there weren't many kids there, the people running the dunk tank gave them several free tries. You can't see the kids tee shirts very well but they say HUMANities in large black letters across the front. Jack and I were wearing the same thing. (This was my rebellious reaction to the official shirt design which was chosen the year or so before.) Actually Jarrod suggested that the shirt have a manatee on the front with a word balloon saying "Hi! My name is Hugh." [Get it?? Hugh-manatee(s)]

UCI Founding Faculty and Staff Event On October 11, 2005 the UC Irvine Alumni Association held a 40th Anniversary Founders' Day Reception at the University Club. This was done in conjunction with the 40th year celebration for the campus, which opened in 1965 as the ninth campus of the University of California - the only UC in Orange County. To my surprise, my twin sister Becky and I are considered founding alumni because we were students in the '60s - just barely. We started as freshmen in Fall of 1969 so we just made it into the "founding" category. I am the red blob on the right and my sister is almost dead center above Jean Aldrich. If I had known almost everyone else was going to dress in black, gray or beige, I would have, too. Some of the people in the picture are founding faculty. I wasn't sure if I would know anyone besides Becky and Spence Olin (back row) but to my surprise Gordon Smith was there. He is in the top row, above and just to the lef...

Laurel and Hardy (sort of) This my sister Becky and me.  I don't remember the exact year this was, but probably around 2000.  I had been wanting to dress up for the Staff Halloween Contest with Becky.  I wanted us to be Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.  I even volunteered to be Dum but Becky suggested Laurel and Hardy which sounded good to me.  Becky got her suit and our shoes (men's shoes) from Salvation Army.  The hats were just cheapo Halloween stuff.  I borrowed the shirt, tie and suspenders from my husband.  The pants were mine.  We went to the contest and won!  We had rehearsed one of the cute little song and dance routines from one of their movies, Way Out West, I think.  We performed it for my father and he was thrilled.  We were too chicken to perform at the contest but Beck and I had worked out some mannerisms that made people laugh.  You can get an idea of them here.  I would twiddle my tie and dig my toe in ...
